You can just let it compound in size for the first 5-10 years or until retirement then withdraw/ sell sustainably from it every now and then to generate your income. Its no different from a dividend since every time your holdings pay a dividend your total account value never really changes as the stock value goes down the same amount that they pay out in dividend. Selling shares for income instead of dividend is more tax efficient as well.
